While reading the book, I realized that Dennis Obdin, the target from the mission, is very powerful and his power is targeted by Cherub and its spies. Power is known as a universal theme topic that is shown in the book. Dennis Obdn has wealth and control over something illegal. His targeting is shown here,” … meeting with Dennis Obdin. Maybe their cover got blown, or…” (47). By “cover”, the author means the cover of the teens that are spying on Dennis and destroy whatever plans he has. Their covers probably might have been blown because after this quote, James was awaken by by the henchmen of Obdin. Another form of power is shown on page 80,” Joe looked happy; his four younger companions like it was too good to be true. “I want you boys to do me a favor,” Slava said seriously. “DIvide the money evenly, take it home and keep your mouths shut…” Slava is a man with power and wealth that brought James from Joe, a man he captured and beat James, along with his companions, in order to sell him to Slava. Joe held power over James in order to sell him to Slava and Slava held power over Joe and his companions in order to buy James.

On page 41, you learn more about the way that Mr.Large reacts to a situation and how his personality is shown on this part of the book. On pages 40-41, Mr.Large appears very angry, frustrated, and strict man. As show here,” ‘Norman?’ Large growled. ‘How dare you call me Norman. You address me as sir’” (41). Lauren and Rat are just trying to help him because he has just fallen from a stretcher. The stretcher from which they were trying to help him navigate. And now he is having a heart attack while on the ground and they are only trying to help and call help for him. Just as shown in this quote from page 40, “ Stay still,’ Bethany shouted desperately. ‘You’ve just had a heart attack.’ ‘ Poppycock,’ Large bellowed. ‘Let me off of this contraption {the stretcher}.” Mr.Large has just had his first heart attack and once again the teens are simply trying to help him get onto the stretcher. They even push him until he falls because of his overweight.
In the Book Cherub, by Robert Muchamore, the characters are Dennis Obdin, James. Mark, Lauren Adam, Bethany, Rat, Mr.Large. James is an one of the agents who are being trained/are trained agents who are under the age of 17. Lauren, Bethany and Rat are also agents. Mr.Large is their school teacher, Mark is the son of Dennis Obdin, and Dennis Obdin is a criminal who has a lot of money and owns most of the land and property, and all of the factories in Aero City. Shown on this quote,” Dennis Odin's luxury home had featured in glossy magazines both in Russia and across northern Europe” (page 15). Aero City is where James, the main character, is at. He is there on a mission that was briefing for him. His mission is on Dennis Obdin and what he does. James is dynamic because at first he is this normal teenager but then turns into this highly trained agent. Dennis, right now, seems to be static . There was a quote in the book that makes James seem like a low, negative person, it stated,” A romantic might have found it beautiful, but James Adams could only see cold” (pg 16). In the first book, James’ mother died which led him to go into the Cherub in the first place. He was a troubled boy which was what attracted the organization. HIm being a troubled boy and his mother dying may be why he is so low.
13 Reasons Why The universal theme of the story is a little on the side of “don’t do things to others that you wouldn’t want done to you” or “ actions have consequences.” In this case, the consequence is being a part of the effect that caused Hannah to kill herself. Patterns seem to come up a lot in the book. For example when Hannah is going to reveal the person and what they did to her, she first introduces the person and a little background information on them. A couple paragraphs after, she explains how she met them and how close or not close she was with that person. Then suddenly, she elaborates the reason why they made the cut. For instance, she does it here in this quote,”But instead you took the sweet route, so everyone would like you and not a soul would hate. Let me be very clear. I do not hate you, Courtney. In fact, I didn’t even dislike you. But for a time, I thought you and I were becoming friends.” Along with this quote,”It turns out you were just grooming me to be another tally mark under People Who Think Courtney Crimsen Is a Really Neat Girl.” Do you see how she gives us a small amount of background information about Courtney and the kind of person she is? She stated that Courtney was a just a girl who wanted to be purposefully sweet to everybody, not naturally, in order to be popular and well-liked. Her sweetness and nice girl personality was all an act, it was fake. Further into the tape about Courtney, Hannah elaborates that Courtney made it into one of the tapes because of her fake personality and how she used it against Hannah. People in real life, act in a like Courtney in order to be popular or for another reason. They don't want to be hated on, so they create a fake persona.
13 reasons Why In a particular part of the story, I realized that “over time” is relevant to to the story. “Why didn’t you leave me alone, Tyler? My house. My bedroom. They were supposed to be safe for me. Safe from everything outside. But you were the one who took that away” (89). This quote, is an example of how Hannah lets her emotions out, over time. Additionally, how over time, the tapes reveal a specific person that hurt Hannah and how they hurt her. Along with revealing the person over time, the book slowly shows how connected Clay feels with Hannah and how anxious he is to know what he did to her. He wants to know once and for all what he did to get a spot in one of those tapes. Here’s a quote showing a connection that Clay has with Hannah,” “ And finally… I discovered I was sick of this town and everything in it. I’m starting to get there, too, Hannah” (118). All of the events that have happened to Hannah have made her sick of her town and everything it represents: the people and the places. Clay is listening to all of the events that have made Hannah sick if their town and also is starting to get sick of it.
13 Reasons Why The main conflict in the story is that Clay doesn’t know what he did to Hanna that made him a reason as to why she committed suicide. As a reader I don’t know what Clay did that became a conflict. The problem affects Clay and his emotions towards Hannah and what he has to do with her suicide. Clay continues to listen to the tapes and visits places that had a strong meaning towards Hannah. The conflict is definitely affecting Clay internally because he thinks of Hannah and how shy he was to talk to her and how much he regrets it. The conflict is obviously personal to Clay. “As the stories go by one by one, I find myself relieved when my name isn’t mentioned. Followed by a fear of what she [Hannah] hasn't said yet, of what she’s going to say, when my turn comes. Because my turn is coming. I know that. What did I do to you, Hannah? ” (pg.73) This quote shows how anxious and how scared Clay is to know what he did. It also shows how Clay doesn’t know at all about what he did. This next quote shows Clay visiting one of Hannah’s meaningful places.” In honor of Hannah, I should order a hot chocolate. At Monet’s they serve them with tiny marshmallows....”(pg.69)
In 13 Reasons Why, the characters are, Hannah Baker, Clay Jensen, Justin Foley, Alex Standall, Jessica Davis, Tony, Tyler, and other teenagers and teachers that are mentioned. Hannah is the girl that committed suicide and recorded all of the tapes that state the 13 reasons why she killed herself. There are seven loose audio tapes each tape has a number on each side. The tapes involve people and what they did that made them a reason as to why Hannah killed herself. Clay, Justin, Alex, and Jessica represent 4 of those people. In the book Hannah states this,”Alex Standall it’s your turn.I’m sure you have no idea why you’re on here Alex.”(pg.36) She also says this,”But it’s more than just a scratch. A punch in the stomach and a slap on the face. It’s a knife in my back because you would rather believe some made-up rumor than what you know to be true.” (pg.68) This statement is being told to Jessica in one of the tapes. She is telling her this because Hannah feels betrayed by her, deeply. Hannah isn’t static, she feels happy and in love for some parts and then betrayed and hurt the for other parts of the book.
